Psychology Internship

Summary: 

Interns will work under the supervision of a senior psychologist or clinician in the following areas: crisis services and group counseling, developmental and outreach programming, vocational/behavioral assessment and behavioral program development. The intern will consult with staff providing direct support to individuals receiving services in matters involving challenging behaviors and family crisis, as well as assist direct care staff in carrying out individualized service plans to achieve valued outcomes. While working with their supervisor, interns will evaluate individuals and design and implement behavioral plans, as well as select and administer program plans.

Qualified interns must be enrolled in an ABA, Psychology or Community Health program and should have skills to model counselor/consumer interaction and the ability to role-play, as needed. An intern should have the ability to effectively analyze, synthesize, interpret, communicate, and present data from a variety of sources in appropriate and understandable language to both lay persons and professionals, both verbally and in writing. Thet psychology intern should be willing to identify areas of deficiency and seek appropriate professional growth experiences for self-improvement.

Human First Interns have opportunities to gain expertise in our different programs directed towards individuals who exhibit challenging behaviors with direct supervision from our team of psychologists. Our programs are as follows: crisis intervention, day habilitation, community habilitation, respite, individualized support services, service coordination, and residential programs.
Interns will obtain advanced training in assessments, interventions, and treatment modalities. Our internship program is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of ethical and professional conduct.

Detail of Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Develop advanced clinical skills through the integration of theory, research, and practice
  • Prepare interns to provide services in the areas of individual and group psychotherapy, outreach programming, assessment, and clinical supervision
  • Develop ability to integrate supervisory feedback into clinical interventions
  • Developing skills needed for working competently with culturally diverse populations
  • Be part of annual and semiannual meetings
  • Be part of one on one therapy sessions

Other Skills and Qualifications: 

  • Strong computer skills (Word and Excel) required.
  • Ability to comprehend regulatory standards, policy and criteria to clearly articulate health information is required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to assume a lead role in ensuring that all objectives are met is desired.
  • Working collaboratively with others in team
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Patient, empathic, and show good judgment in pressured situations
  • Genuine passion for working with individuals with special needs
